How To Become An Operating Theatre Technician
Operation theatres are an intrinsic part of the hospitals, emergency care departments, ICUs and to function efficiently, they need qualified allied healthcare professionals called Operating Theatre Technician.
Operating Theatre Technician is a member of a multidisciplinary team in operation theatres who prepares and maintains an operating theatre, assists anesthetist and surgical team during the perioperative period and provides support to patients in the recovery room.

Operating Theatre Technician helps learners to become thorough with surgical procedures, planned and emergency both. It enables them for the following procedures;
- Preoperative procedures- also sometimes called the anaesthetic phase-maintaining the sterile environment inside the operating theatre and arranging sterilized surgical instruments for the surgery.
- During the surgery- or the surgical phase-the OTT carry out surgeon’s commands during surgery.
- Postoperative procedures- cleaning the operating theatre and instruments, operating table and re-establishing a contaminant-free environment.
- Also, help them to learn providing support to patients in the recovery room in the recovery phase.
Become an Operation Theatre Technician
To become a trained professional, one must undertake an operation theatre technology course. It has different variants like the anesthesia technicians course also available, although the core subjects and training remain the same.
One can choose between a Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Operation Theatre Technology-DOTT or B.sc Operation Theatre Technology program- BOTT
- DOTT — 1–2 year program with 6 months of internship
- BOTT — 3-year program with the compulsory 6 (six) month to a one-year internship
